The Coming Merger of Digital and Biological Intelligence: How will this impact education in the 21st Century?
I this video Kurzweil, a futurist with and impressive track record of predictions coming to fruition, talks about the phases or epoch's of the digital revolution and suggests that we are at the phase just before digital intelligence begins to weave into our biological intelligence. He holds up the SmartPhone as an example of technologies ever increasing power while continually compressing in size and adds that it is just a matter of time before nano technologies will allow digital intelligence to be implanted into our body. This brought up several questions for me from learning perspective. The first was obvious. How does the implanted digital intelligence interact with the biological intelligence? Will we continue to have free will and domain(control) over our whole self including the digital self? In other words, since so much of what we learn is learned by choice, how will the digital intelligence know what learn? I will assume that the digital intelligence will not have a preferred learning style built into it so how will it know how our biological intelligence learns most effectively? Will it learn about us so it can help us to learn? Finally, will the digital intelligence be a measured supplement to our biological intelligence, exerting more or less processing power depending on our biological intelligence's need? Will it regulate itself over time so it increases it's activity as our biological intelligence wanes in our later years of life or more interestingly, will it create a standard intelligence across all humans it is implanted in? What if only a privileged class of people were able to afford this digital intelligence? Perhaps that would represent the new digital divide! What do you think?
